Thoughts on City Paper cover story on Philly porn star

So turns out one of today’s biggest, brightest and youngest upcoming porn stars lives in South Philadelphia.
And really, where else could Stoya live.
Philadelphia City Paper devoted its latest cover story to her. Nearly 5,000 words, friends. Writer Matt Stroud is getting beaten up a bit in the blogosphere and on the story comments – though some are complimentary – and there’s been some buzz around it, so I gave it a read, though I’m currently out of Philly.

I am the future of journalism (Publish2: 12/30/08)
By Christopher Wink | Dec. 30, 2008 | Publish2
It is 11:55 p.m. on Dec. 30, 2008: minutes before deadline. Perfect.
I am very young and very green. Sometimes I spend entire hours thinking about everything I don’t know. Then I go ask a journalist.
My name is Christopher Wink, and I am the future of journalism because I don’t know anyone who loves the history of journalism and is excited by the future of journalism as much as I am. New media punditry is mostly filled with those who say print is dead and seem downright gleeful about it, and those who are still wondering, hey, why don’t all the newspapers get together and not put any content online?
I want to do both.

Enjoying your day off and the end of summer but have no idea why?

Video: Molly and menstruation, circa 1953, seriously
Everything I ever learned and didn’t want to know about menstruation came from an educational video from 1953.

July 4 Celebration in Philadelphia: I'm not there
I had plans that if a state budget deal was finished in time, I would go back to Philadelphia to see their July 4 celebration outside of the Art Museum.
Being the home of the Declaration, Cradle of Liberty and birthplace of Democracy, Philadelphia has to throw the best Independence Day celebration. It’s in the Constitution, I think.
This year, right about now, John Legend is performing, I am in the State Capitol in Harrisburg, not even enjoying what the state capital has to celebrate our nation’s independence. Lame!

Statewide smoking ban passes conference committee
I covered a Pennsylvania House-Senate conference committee hearing on a statewide smoking ban this morning for the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.
HARRISBURG — A House-Senate conference committee today approved a statewide smoking ban, but a member of the panel blasted the agreement, saying it amounted to telling Allegheny County to “go to hell.”
The agreement must be approved by the full House and Senate. It carves out a partial exemption for casinos and some bars.”
Read the rest on Pittsburgh Live.
It marks a laborious, 10-month joint effort to find compromise between a state Senate and more restrictive state House bill. Stewart Greenleaf, R-Montgomery, made note of the long process.
This has probably been the longest [conference committee] in the history of the commonwealth.”
Hear Greenleaf speak on a statewide ban last month.
